In this portfolio, I wanted to explore the different trees that surround me in Charlottesville, VA. I found many of these trees to be interesting because of their geometries. The leaves and cones are created in fractals-a mathematical way of explaining a repeating pattern in a different scale. The branches are also organized by fractals. By looking deeply at the individual elements of the tree, I see how each tree is both unique and the same as the next.
This work was created on a view camera with 4" x 5" black and white film. After processing the film, I scanned it to digitally compose the layout and include the scientific name of the tree to identify it as it is. I have title the pieces by their common names to show that it is the same as what you know and recognize as a tree around you. This connection between knowing and understanding leads to recognition of the world around us.
